In this same cave she finds a giant yellow and blue slug, which she adopts as her own and names Doomslug. Spensa after every lesson would go stay in a cave she found away from the city, where she would help repair the sentient ship M-Bot who is obsessed with mushrooms. One person she did not trust however was the obnoxious Jorgen, or as Spensa nicknamed him, Jerkface. Spensa is put into the Skyward flight crew (named after her recommendation) and finds a friend in her flight mate Kimmalyn, and eventually her other classmates. Cobb, her father's former wingmate and an instructor at the academy, spies on her and sees her near-perfect score, so he offers her the opportunity to come train under him. Angry at her defeat, she surreptitiously retakes the exam after everyone has left. However, on the day of the testing, DDF Admiral Ironsides rigs the exam so that Spensa fails. Spensa, who has been preparing for the exam her entire life, has high hopes to pass, as does her longtime friend Rodge. In order to get accepted into the flight academy, Spensa and her peers must take an exam to prove their worth. This didn't stop Spensa from dreaming about joining the DDF herself, where she would prove she was not a coward. Spensa grew up discriminated for being the daughter of a coward, although she knew in her heart her father would never be a coward. Eventually, the “powers that be” selected the approach and I was on my way.Spensa for the greater part of the series is a 17 year old, she has brown hair and distinctive purple eyes on book co. I was torn whether to show Rand and his companions outside or inside the cave I attempted to visualize both. Many websites and blogs devoted to the Wheel of Time books provided details of character appearances that the scene lacked.Īfter studying the covers of the earlier volumes, I elected to bring the protagonist Rand forward to dominate the front book jacket. My compositional ideas were limited to depicting-in the best way I could-the brief episode provided. The author and publisher selected the cover scene in advance. I usually insist on reading the manuscript, but it wasn’t possible this time. I decided the last cover should retain a sense of continuation while bringing the epic to a close. I was honored to paint the cover image for the final book in the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, but it was a daunting prospect given the massive backstory of 14 books written over a span of 20+ years.Įach volume, illustrated by the late Darrell K.
